S&C reader mail–cream colored pumps for spring

Dear Ms. S&C,
I really want light beige or cream colored pumps for spring…I think they’re “in”? I just bought a navy blue dress, and I think this pair from Ralph Lauren will look good with it. I really want a pair of open-toe heels, but maybe I can save up for those later. What do you think?

Many thanks,

——————————————-

Dear KG,

I am so tempted to say look no further than these cream Ralph Lauren’s because I love the wooden platform and heel. And, I love that they are cream (very much “in” this spring). I also love the textured print (very sexy). I just love everything about them in general. They are great for work and great for the evening — great find all around! While I think they are the clear winner, here are a few other choices, just for kicks. Slingbacks, like these from Anne Klein, are a good choice for spring, if you can’t find a pair of open-toes. I also love neutral-toned patents. These from Endless have a stacked wooden heel, but no cool platform. Finally, an almost identical pair from Nine West. All très affordable.

Happy spring!
Ms. S&C

P.S. Did I forget to mention how much I also love the cream shoes with the navy dress? That fun and flirty bow on the front — um, adorable. I have several items suited for navy shoes, but it is so hard to find attractive, stylish navy pumps. Perhaps I’ve found my alternative, n’est pas?

Shoes & Cocktails in Staunton

Staunton, Va, is one of my favorite places for a quick weekend visit. They have a great Shakespeare theater company and beautiful architecture, but most importantly, Staunton is home to some amazing restaurants and great shops.

I’ve been dreaming of sculptural purple heels for a while now, so I decided to indulge myself in this wedge pair at the cute clothing store Design at Nine. The patent body is a very dark purple, while the swath of suede across the wedge itself is a more brilliant shade of violet. Plus, they were a steal at 50 percent off. While there’s still a bit of a chill in the air, I’m pairing these with my black opaque tights, but they’ll also be flattering bare legged as the spring temperatures pick up.

Miss Mojito was equally excited by the cocktails she encountered that same evening at Staunton Grocery Store. The Gin Fizz was my drink of choice. This quick cocktail relies on just gin, key lime and soda with satisfying results. We also sampled the Dr. Gonzo (pictured in the background), a mixture of Wild Turkey, cherry and lime. Festive cocktails were the start of an excellent meal (not to mention a highly worthwhile weekend getaway).

The men’s department

Our closets, nor our back accounts, can handle more than one clotheshorse in the family, but Ms. S&C can count the number of shoes Mr. S&C owns on one hand. She thinks it is time that he freshen up his wardrobe a bit. And, of course, she is here to help! Here are some early footwear picks that she wishes he would go for.

millbrook-mocs

These leather driving mocs with contrast stitching are fairly understated, and look comfy, no? A good fit because Mr. S&C is also understated (in the best possible sense), and he sometimes has an aversion to laces.

sydney-shoes1

These boots, (I guess you would call them boots), are a little bit hipster and a little bit rugged. Not sure Mr. S&C would like to be described that way, but I think they are pretty awesome. sperry-slip-on

I love these timeless patchwork plaid slip-ons. But, I’m also a total sucker for infusing nautical preppiness every now and again. Mr. S&C, remember we’ve got a beach trip coming up — and again, no laces!

tassel-mocs

Tassel mocs are making a comeback says Footwear News. But Mr. S&C doesn’t don a three piece suit and cuff links too often, but if he did…

I’m not going to transform Mr. S&C’s footwear selection overnight. But, there’s one thing I know he won’t pass up — scotch and soda. I guess he prefers his cocktails like he prefers his shoes, sans embellishments.  He imbibes a variety of blended Scotch whiskeys, but recently he has become a friend of Johnnie Walker Black. Also a friend of Winston Churchill, coincidentally.

Scotch & Soda

  • Fill cocktail glass with ice
  • Pour in 2 ounces of blended scotch
  • Top with club soda
  • Garnish with a twist of lemon

Fringe is In

Way back in 2008, celebrity stylist extraordinaire Rachel Zoe predicted that fringe would make heavy appearances in 2009’s fashion forecast. And boy, was she right. It’s fun, it’s frivolous, it’s trendy—it’s just the sort of lighthearted fashion that might take our minds off of more. . . serious issues.

And fringe isn’t just for suede cowgirl jackets anymore. Over at S&C, we’re seeing it on bags, and tops, and most importantly to our kind, shoes.

These peep-toe patent pom pom platforms use fringe in a fun and unconventional way, and are almost too cute to be allowed.

For the recessionista-minded, you can’t get much better than Target’s fringe pumps by Mossimo, available in black and “dark caramel.” I love the multi-layer flaps of fringe and the sexy ankle strap.

target_fringe1

For a flapper-inspired trend, I recommend a 1920s-inspired libation. In the absence of some homemade bathtub gin, I’m looking forward to trying the Bee’s Knees, a gin concoction that relies on honey, lemon and lavender for flavor.

The Bee’s Knees

  • 1 part hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried lavender blossoms
  • 1 part honey
  • 1.5 parts gin
  • 1/2 part lemon juice

Mix the hot water and dried lavender blossoms in a bowl. Let steep for five minutes. Whisk in honey and strain out the lavender. Add the honey syrup, gin and lemon juice. Pour into a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass (or, if you’re searching for authentic flair, a chilled bathtub.)

Green with envy

Forget the parades, shamrocks, and leprechauns for your St. Patrick’s Day celebration. There are green shoes to be worn! And the variety is incredible — floral, t-strap, patent, snakeskin, flats, platforms, sneakers and rainboots. The strappy sandals are my personal faves. They are flirty and fun, and I can see them having a place in my spring wardrobe long after the Irish festivities are over. Quick reader quiz — who can spot the $1,000 pair and which are eco-friendly? Share your guess in the comments section.

As far as imbibing on this occasion, beer is traditionally the favorite. And, like shoes, there are more choices than you think.

1. Irish beer, such as Guinness or Harp

St. Patrick’s Day is the only day of the year when I’m tempted to drink a Guinness or a Harp or both. I like the half-and-half combo which yields a Black & Tan.

2. Green beer, as in beer that is the color green

Green beer, even on St. Patty’s Day, doesn’t really appeal to me, but I thoroughly enjoy that others consume it. In the event you ever want to mix up your own batch, Mix That Drink outlines, step-by-step, how to make this concoction.

3. Green beer, as in beer that is eco-friendlygreen-beer

Drinking beer is good for you and the environment. Well, not exactly. But it still sounds like a cause that many of us can get behind. The Sierra Club has a few recommendations for beers made by companies who are working to lighten their carbon footprint–Sierra Nevada and Brooklyn Brewery are included. This way you can drink green beer today and any other day.

Cheers!

Spring forward

Spring is only a few weeks away. Is your closet ready? Ms. S&C is looking forward to the arrival of warmer weather, and here are a few trends she can’t pass up.

First up is the denim-rolled-above-the-ankles-look.  I’m as surprised as anyone that I like this look. It certainly does not mean I’m a fan of the slouchy tapered ankle trouser. These harem pants can’t possibly look good on anyone with hips, so no thanks. But, the baggy boyfriend cut or the skinny jean rolled above the ankle — I like how this style can work for many body types, and show off your impressive footwear.

jcrew-rolled-denim-picralph-lauren-skylarAnd by impressive footwear, I mean something like these wooden heels from Ralph Lauren. Miss M referred to this style as the “extreme strappy sandal” in her inaugural post. I love the woven leather detail and the platform. They could definitely be my statement shoe of the season.

Another footwear trend that is exploding — neutral-colored pumps. Nude is the new black, people. And when colors like stone, dust, blush and sand come in patent, even better. These conical heels, slingbacks and peep-toes pretty much sum it up.

Coney Island

The first—and only—time I overdrew from my checking account was to purchase a pair of brown leather open-toe conical heel pumps. (Miss Mojito Peep-Toe Conical Heelsmust stress that she is normally much more responsible when it comes to her shoe purchases!) I found them after sorting through loads of shoes at Nordstrom Rack, and immediately found myself drooling over the chic peep toe and the bright red lining, but most of all, the eye-catching heel. This was my first encounter with the cone-shaped heel, which starts wide and round at the base of the shoe and narrows to a smaller point. The shape is retro, feminine and utterly irresistible to Miss Mojito.

I recently reintroduced myself to the conical heel at the Asheville, N.C. shoe-mecca, Tops for Shoes, on a weekend getaway. The shop is known for a well edited selection, but even more, they’re known for their regular sales.

Mary Jane Conical HeelsIt was in the clearance section of Tops for Shoes that I came across this pair of gray leather Mary Jane-style pumps with a conical heel by Seychelles. They’re super comfy, and the neutral color pops with my pair of purple gem-tone tights.

For this shoe’s sophisticated and slightly retro silhouette, I think a sophisticated—and slightly retro—drink is in order. For sophistication, you can’t do much better than a martini—served, of course, in a traditional, cone-shaped martini glass.

You might have seen Jason Wilson’s recent Washington Post article, “Stirrings of a Better Martini,” which taught me a thing or two about the classic concoction. According to Mr. Wilson, there is no such thing as a “vodka martini,” which is just fine by this gin-lover. Moreover, the martini’s reputation has apparently been destroyed by macho men who think of the sweet touch of vermouth as a bit too feminine for their tastes.

The Post dishes up four different martini recipes for experimentation. I must admit that the martini has never been my favorite drink, but I’m inclined to give the Martinez a try. Mr. Wilson describes it as the martini for those with a sweet tooth.

The Martinez

  • Ice
  • 1 ½ ounces Old Tom Gin*
  • 1 ½ sweet vermouth
  • 1 teaspoon maraschino liqueur**
  • 2 dashes orange or aromatic bitters
  • 1 twist of lemon or orange peel, for garnish

Fill a mixing glass halfway full with ice. Add the gin, vermouth, maraschino liqueur and bitters. Stir vigorously for at least 30 seconds, then strain into a cocktail (martini) glass. Garnish with the lemon or orange peel twist.

*Some googling around led me to discover that a commonly recommended substitute is 1 ½ ounces of regular gin with about ½ an ounce of simple syrup.

**The recommendation here is for maraschino liqueur, NOT to be confused with maraschino juice, which is apparently sweeter. Since Miss M doesn’t mind her drinks a bit on the sweet side—and because she’s not likely to have the liqueur available in her cabinet—she plans to give the juice a try as a substitute.

S&C alerts–red hot fashion and cocktails

Here are some of Ms. S&C’s favorite finds in the worlds of shoes and cocktails.

New York Fashion Week was last week. I’m always a bit overwhelmed and underwhelmed by fashion weeks. There’s always so much coverage, and I never know what to read. Plus, there’s the whole never-in-my-lifetime-will-I-ever-afford-this-so-why-bother aspect. Well, I’m happy to report two things:

  • Fashion Washington covered fashion week via their FW Runway Report blog. It is a great digestible collection of photos, runway reports, backstage stories and fashion commentary. Note to self: need to tone arms and shoulders — lots of one-shoulder looks and fur coming in the fall.oscar-de-la-renta
  • Footwear News also spotlighted designers shoes. Subscription access prevents us from seeing a lot of the styles, but it appears platforms, booties and exotic prints will be popular in the fall. I particularly like the pointy platform booties from Oscar de la Renta.

And speaking of digestible, in last week’s Washington Post Food Section, Gastronomer columnist Andreas Viestad, shared a very interesting dessert cocktail using chili peppers. The Hot and Cold Whisky cold-whisky-chili-granitaChili Granita is definitely a contender for the S&C test kitchen. You can change the flavor depending on the chili pepper and spirit used. For example–for a smokier flavor, use chipotle peppers and single malt scotch; for something sweeter, use bourbon. The Whisky Chili Granita is described as something that could “wake up” guests after a long dinner. Cheers to that.

We’re live on Oscar night!

The S&C Team are blogging live on Hollywood’s biggest night of the year!

Ms. S&C: Just saw Heidi Klum in a gorgeous one-shoulder red hot number. And matching red satin pumps. Can’t wait to find out who those were. Not sure about the excessive jewelry. Did it even match?

Miss Mojito: So far, I’ve spotted two other ladies in red: best supporting actress nominee Amy Adams picked a drapey, strapless column gown; and Big Love’s Amanda Seyfried’s version features spaghetti straps and a big bow (which she paired with some cage-style, pewter heels). Amanda gets a thumbs-down from me, Amy is thumbs-up.

Ms. S&C: What are you drinking this evening Miss M? I’m at a friend’s six annual Oscar bash and starting with a glass of champagne, naturally.

Miss Mojito: Chianti and a plate of pasta for me!

Wow. Sarah Jessica Parker. I don’t know what to say. When I saw her from the waist up, I swooned over the gold-detailed bodice. But when the camera panned down to the skirt, one might guess that she’s hiding a family of five beneath the layers.  I like drama as much as the next girl, but how is she going to sit down in that thing??

Ms. S&C: The stars from The Wrestler have arrived. Marisa Tomei looks great — love the smokey eyes. Mickey Rourke is true to his rebel self and has opted out of wearing a tux. So sweet that he has a picture of his late Chihuahua around his neck.

Miss Mojito: I definitely hope that Mickey wins best actor, just so we can hear his speech.

Hooray, winter white is ruling the red carpet! Melissa George and D.C.-native Taraji P. Henson both look pretty fantastic in white. Melissa’s look is a bit too lingerie-inspired for my tastes, but Taraji looks like perfection in her tiered, strapless version with a bold statement necklace. And I just spotted Marissa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood both in creamy, origami-pleated dresses. I’m hoping that Anne Hathaway’s paillette-covered, cream-tone gown looks better in person – on camera, it feels a bit dull to me. The verdict is out on Jessica Biel’s white dress – I like the billowy neckline, but the satin is already wrinkling. I think I just caught a glimpse of Penelope Cruz in white, too.

Ms. S&C: A comment from the gallery here — Jessica Biel’s dress looks like she has a large napkin tucked in. Not sure how I feel about all the draping. But yes, all kinds of winter white! Brangelina arrives! Even though Angelina is in a plain black dress, she looks better than ever. I think the curls soften her. And I love the pop of color from the green earrings.

Miss Mojito: All these floor-length gowns are a major source of frustration – where are the shoes?? Tim Gunn just asked Kate Winslet who designed her shoes (Yves St. Laurent), and the camera didn’t even catch a glimpse of them!

Ms. S&C: There really are a lot of red and white gowns this evening. I can’t get over it. I wish Tim Gunn was interviewing more celebrities. And I wish Miley Cyrus and the High School Musical gang weren’t taking up so much air time. Why are they even here? Miley might be wearing the worst dress I’ve ever seen.

Miss Mojito: Did anyone just see Tim Gunn literally chase Brad and Angelina down the runway to tell them how much he loves them? Too funny – Tim is definitely my favorite person on the red carpet tonight.

Wait, I take that back – the entire cast of Slumdog Millionaire might qualify for that distinction. They just gathered for a group interview and I got teary eyed. The kids are too cute for words, Dev Patel is charming and Freida Pinto is simply stunning. I’m a bit torn over her one-sleeve number, but the color and fit are highly flattering.

Ms. S&C: Hugh Jackman, I may want to marry you.

Miss Mojito: I think my favorite line of the night comes from the woman wearing my least favorite outfit. When Whoopi Goldberg, while praising Amy Adam’s role in Doubt, said “It’s not easy being a nun,” I laughed out loud (I’m a closet-fanatic when it comes to Sister Act I and II). But that leopard-print monstrosity of a dress – Whoopi, what were you thinking?

Ms. S&C: Tina Fey and Steve Martin — a winning combo. Tina looks fantastic in her shimmery dress and hair to the side–very 1930s.

On a separate note, I have to give a shout out to the Milk screenwriter who won for Best Original Screenplay–pretty awesome as political acceptance speeches go.

Miss Mojito: I love the mother-daughter duo of Meryl Streep and her daughter, Louisa. They complement each other so well—earthy tones, simple cuts, age appropriate, elegant hair. And I was a big fan of Meryl in Doubt – she makes a very convincing nun.

Ms. S&C: Holy god, my first shoe comment of the night is about the guy who won for Best Cinematography — he is wearing nude colored clogs.  I don’t care if he is Danish, it is wrong.

Mixed comments from the gallery on Natalie Portman’s dress. I kinda like her pink/purple-ish fitted gown. Ditto on the Streep family. So classy.

Ms. S&C: So, we’re about to close up shop for the night. Oh wait, Reese Witherspoon’s dress is a total disappointment. And the blue eye makeup is too much. She’s done so well recently. Halle Berry comes out for the Best Leading Actress presentation, and she’s worth waiting for–she’s looks great. Hooray for Kate Winslet! Anne Hathaway, we love you too, but we know you’ll be back.

That’s it for the S&C Team. Thanks for reading! Share a comment below and tell us who was your Oscar fashion fave and, of course, your fashion knave.

Love is in the air

Happy Valentine’s Day! The theme of love continues over here at S&C. Ms. S&C had two good friends marry a few weeks ago and thought now would be the time to share a few details.

Friends SB and LD were married in a courthouse ceremony, so they spent their wedding day with a small gathering of family and close friends — until an evening reception when many more of us joined them to celebrate. When I saw SB, she was stunning in a Tahari dress. The dress, knee length, had gorgeous silver detailing, a cut-out neckline, and was finished with a belted bow. I so wish there was a picture to share. It was very Jackie O/Audrey Hepburn-esque. SB said a courthouse wedding seemed a bit retro so she went with a vintage late 50s/early 60s look.

Naturally, I wanted to see what shoes she paired. And she really couldn’t have found a better match for the dress. The shoes were beautiful and elegant and had P-E-R-F-E-C-T bow detailing to compliment the belt on the dress. She picked up this ivory pair over at DSW, where there are more color choices. And with a price tag of $49.95, I’m very tempted to get the black ones.

wedding-shoes

SB’s perfect wedding shows with bow detail

Another fun retro-y detail — at the reception, instead of wedding cake, red velvet cupcakes were served. I’m not sure I’ve tasted a better cupcake. The baker has a blog where she shares the recipe, and she comments that “the intense red color of the cake has some sort of hypnotic effect, because people are always delighted just to lay eyes on the cake, and then absolutely smitten when they finally taste it.” Absolutely right, sista.

Delicious red velvet wedding cupcakes

To further celebrate this heart-filled holiday, here’s a romantic cocktail that fits the occasion. It was inspired by the Rose Royce Cocktail, courtesy of OVAL Vodka. One of the original ingredients in the recipe was rose syrup. I subbed St. Germain elderflower liqueur because it of its floral notes and because I already had it in my cabinet. I used grenadine instead of simple syrup so the drink would have a slight pink color. I also didn’t have any fresh thyme, but the rosemary in my garden has survived the winter (and it seemed a better fit, both in name and flavor). All in all, a lovely drink.

The Rose Cocktail
makes one drink

1 oz. Vodka (Oval recommended)
1/3 oz. St. Germain
1/3 oz. Grenadine
2/3 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
1 dash Angostura Bitters
½ glass Champagne

Shake all ingredients well over ice and pour into a flute half-filled with champagne. Garnish with a sprig of fresh rosemary.
